First, congrats on your new aFe intake!
I feel the need to open with
a few disclaimers to minimize the emails. I
know this isn't the first, best or last DIY on this
intake, I'm just doing what I can for those who
happen to stumble upon it. Also, the
instructions that come with the intake are very
helpful. After all, how do you think I
installed mine?
That
said, I sought to improve on the manufacturer's
instructions with some color photos and some first
hand accounts of what worked and what didn't.
This first page is just the removal of the stock
intake/airbox. The
second page is the process to install the aFe intake.
Tools you'll need:
4mm allen wrench
1/4" socket, nut-driver
10mm socket or wrench
Med flat screwdriver
Torx bit T-20 (provided) |

Step 1:
Let's inventory all that came in your box.
You should have the
filter (blue). A cleaning kit (the box). The
aluminum shield (on left) the black housing, the
billet adapter (round aluminum thing on the black
housing) and a bag of bolts that includes one Torx
bit T-20 (used later). In the photo above I
had already assembled the billet Adapter to the
black housing. Your billet adapter came in a
separate box but assembles with four M6 x 1 x 10 mm
bolts.
This next picture shows the back side of the housing
with the billet adapter installed.

Step 2: Begin
the removal of the stock intake.
First, you will remove the factory harness from the
MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor). Don't worry about
front vs back, this thing can only be put back on
one way. To remove it, pinch the locking
clamps on the sides and pull towards the suspension
housing (the big blue hump in the picture below).
It may be stubborn but do NOT pull on the wires,
grip it by the sides only.

Step 3:
Removal of the front snorkel from
ducting to stock intake.
Removing this was tricky for me for some reason.
I finally realized that it was a lift up & away
action. The aFe instructions weren't very
clear on this one. In the photo you can see
how I lifted the rear end up first, then pulled it
away from the front ducting.

Step 4:
Removal of the factory intake cover.
Now we will begin
removing the factory intake cover. First we
must loosen the tension clamps that are holding it
down. I used a screwdriver to 'pop' them free
as shown below.

Now
that you have loosened the clamps on the sides, you
need to loosen the hose clamp where the outlet of
this cover goes into the intake track on the engine
as shown below. Loosen the clamp like you see
here. Loosen it very well, it will make
re-assembly later MUCH EASIER!!

After you remove it, you will have to hold the
intake track (the part that still has the hose clamp
on it) as you pull the intake cover free. Be
careful with this, your MAF is still inside this
cover. Set the entire cover aside once you
remove it, we will come back to it and remove the
MAF later. (You could remove the MAF now but
you might break it, so take my advice, leave it
safely in the cover for now :) ).
If you did it right, your engine bay should now look
something like this!

NOTE: MAKE SURE YOUR O-RING IS STILL INTACT - SEE
BELOW
In the
enlarged picture below, you should be able to see a
rubber o-ring INSIDE of the intake track. It
is possible that it 'stuck' to the cover you just
removed. Either way, make sure it is nearby,
you will be needing it later. This is key to a
good seal and not getting any SES (Service Engine
Soon) messages.

Step 5:
Removal of left
headlight controller cover
Ultimately we need to remove ONE of the headlight
controller 10mm screws to get the bottom half of the
intake airbox out. First, we must UNPLUG the
headlight from the controller as you see here.

Next,
you need to free the locking clips that will allow
you to remove the black plastic cover, ultimately
revealing the bolts to be removed. I had a
hell of a time finding these clips but once I did,
releasing the two on the 'inside' of the engine
first made it easier for the one on the fender side
to come out. Here is a picture of the clips.

Once those two were release (and I did it with my
fingers) I was able to pop the rear one off and
completely remove the plastic cover.
Step 6:
Removal of left
bottom of the stock airbox
Now
that the headlight cover is off, you can remove the
two 10mm bolts as shown below.

Now remove the two bolts as shown. Set them
aside and remove the bottom of the airbox.
Keep in mind that it is also connected (via a
pressure fitting) to a brake duct intake.
Don't worry, you can't break anything. Just
wiggle it and pull up, it will come free quite
easily. Your engine bay should now look like
this, perhaps a bit cleaner though.

Step 6:
Removal of rubber
airbox mount
This
one is simple, see that black rubber mount in the
middle of the picture? Just grab it and pull
upwards. It will come right off.

Lastly, I made this one big long page so you can
print it.
This concludes the REMOVAL steps of the stock
intake/airbox. Click below for phase 2,
installing your aFe.
